Editing text files on urania.

You need to be able to read scripts and tables found on urania, and make and edit your own (like batch files, procedures, and programs) so that they can be read and run in IDL on urania.

Reading and writing text on urania with xemacs

% xemacs & # start up xemacs, and put it in "background" so you can still use
    #   x-window for more commands; a new x-emacs window should appear.
In xemacs, open a new window to start working:
C-x C-f # enter the filename -- existing or brand-new -- at the bottom of the screen
  # Note: "C-x C-f" = ctrl- x ctrl-f (in sequence, not simultaneously)
Type to your heart's content, making sure now and then to hit...
C-x C-s # to save the file on disk, or finally...
  C-x C-c # to save and quite x-emacs
